When a male author describes a female character, he starts with her silhouette, how the sunlight is reflecting on her face, how the wind is blowing and making her hairs go out of control, and how her complexion is contrasting against the snow.
It’s all about how the world is making her look.
Whereas, when a female author describes a male, it starts with his eyes, what emotion he has in his eyes, whether is he relaxed in the setting or are his fingers clenched, and whether he is upset about something.
It’s all about how he is looking at the world.
The way we understand each other is often times so different from how the person is understanding themselves.
Men and women are fundamentally different — but are we different even in the way we see the world we share,
How men see the world
How men see things may go back to the caveman days. Men are able to perceive small details and are much better at visually tracking moving objects. And because of this, they are generally good with directions and are better drivers as well.
Now practice can make anyone perfect. So there’s no denying that women aren’t great drivers. It’s just that every human comes with certain natural talents. And men tend to have the benefit of being better at directions and visually tracking moving objects.
This ability is believed to be the result of the development of neurons in the visual cortex which are advanced by male hormones. Men are known to have 25% more of these neurons in that region of the brain.
It may be an evolutionary trait tracing back to when men were hunters and their eyesight was naturally adapted to better track their prey.
How women see the world
In the olden days, women were the gatherers. They had better peripheral vision. It made it easier for them to spot more static items like wild berries.
Women are better able to distinguish between colours too.
For women, the sky is bluer and the grass is greener while for men the line is not so clear.
Colour perception depends on the three cones in the visual system which are stimulated by wavelengths of light. Men require a longer wavelength than women to discern the same hue.
Women and men often communicate differently and assign separate meanings to the same words.
A man is fulfilled through working out the intricate details of solving a problem, a woman is fulfilled through talking about the details of her problems. Even in a partnership, their motivation to stick together is different,
Men are motivated when they feel needed while women are motivated when they feel cherished.
This difference between men and women is beautiful. When they communicate, they get to see both sides of the coin. The value they bring together with their inherent skills and the skills they master.
There’s a lot that makes an individual. Even categorizing people as male and female and attaching certain attributes to them isn’t enough.
There are two types of energies that make up lots of personality traits in a human, masculine and feminine energy. A human has both energies. Generally, males have higher masculine energy than feminine energy and vice versa for females. You will also find a certain percentage of variations as well. For eg, we can have,
Men with high feminine energy,
Women with high masculine energy,
Men with high masculine energy,
Women with high feminine energy,
……
There’s a lot to go on. The gender dynamics can be crazy. But we can keep it stupidly simple by just focusing on ourselves and the people close to us. Understanding your energies, and finding what works best for you is a process that happens naturally with time. You don’t need to overthink it or dive into too much at once.
Focus on your work and things will fall in place.
