5 Things I am not looking forward to in the future.
The future is full of possibilities, the good, the bad and the worse.
The future is full of possibilities, the good, the bad and the worse. Even though I am a fairly optimistic person, sometimes I think about where as a society we are going. And it’s not looking good.
Let’s dive into 5 things that are not looking good from a future perspective:
#1 Humans crippled by Technology
Comfort makes a lot of people feel entitled. The less hardships we have the more buffoon we are becoming. And to keep the dial of our entitlement in check we use gratitude journals.
Remember how in general the people who grow up with too much comfort and are sheltered by their parents, lack character development and interpersonal skills.
They often find difficulty in being on their own.
Now technology is doing the same for us. There are days that we don’t go out because everything we need is readily available to us via a few taps on an app, be it grocery, homemade food or massage.
A lot of people have developed a mindset that, now we don’t need to learn how to write or how to do certain things because chatGPT or some AI tool can do it for us.
Often times people aren’t able to navigate without GPS in a remote place. Because we don’t know how to read a map or ask locals for directions. We don’t know jack shit about survival skills.
If someone puts us in a forest with lions roaming around somewhere, we are done for.
#2 Unpredictable Weather
This year is going on a roller coaster ride of weather, where you don’t know whether it will rain today or the sun will be boiling your head off or out of nowhere you will be looking for your coats and jackets because of the sudden cold.
We can already see the effect of climate change with so many inevitable natural calamities and upended weather ecosystems.
And this is just the start, for years we exploited what was given to us for free.
The weather is going to be on a topsy-turvy curve which is going to be more horrendous. Instead of smelling beautiful petrichor, the smell of soil after rain, we will have to smell something being ruined because of acid rain.
#3 Humans as lone dying wolves
There’s a reason people now are running after normalising:
having fun alone
eating alone
spending time alone [Well, this one is necessary]
living alone
solo trips [Sometimes it’s fun, other times it’s just sad]
We are normalising it because we want to feel good about ourselves.
But we are forgetting one fundamental thing, humans kept winning in the race of survival among other species because of their social adaptability. They realized early on that they can’t survive alone for long.
Some people are great at being alone, they prefer it, and they enjoy it. There always have been hunters who hunt alone and are called lone wolves. But they aren’t dying lone wolves, they are the powerful ones who can survive on their own.
It is not for everyone though, most people need friendships, companionship & familial ties to fall back on when things don’t go so well.
You are the happiest when you know how to live alone but you don’t have to.
#4 Crime world going haywire
Emile Durkheim, the father of academic sociology believed that crime was an important necessity in every society as it played important functional roles in the maintenance of social cohesion.
He was also the first person to suggest, if there’s something wrong with our society, then criminality is a response to that. So basically,
When society overall gets fucked up, there’s a direct impact on the crime world.
Earlier the crime used to have a sensible motive
money
fame
lust
fun
Now, with the human mind falling apart, at times there’s no sensible motive at all.
He looked at me
They shouted at me this morning
I didn’t like his face
I don’t know
I was scared
#5 Robots at the Dinner Table
Well, I was not sure whether I am going to be alive to see this, but now this seems more than plausible in the near future.
We have AI replicas, and when one section of people are finding crazy ways to make money from it.
The other section of people are literally getting honey trapped by AI.
The amalgamation of loneliness + technology gives rise to humans seeking personal connection in technology.
The canvas I painted of the future might look too dark but it’s a canvas after all, a few colourful paints slashes here and there and you will see the beauty outshining the darkness.
